I’ve wanted to go to Rio de Janeiro since I was about 14 or 15 years old. I distinctly remember my mom asking me where I wanted to go for a summer trip. I think she expected me to say Hilton Head or Key West (both great, don’t get me wrong). Nope. I said Rio. She told me I was out of my mind and probably regretted asking in the first place. That moment stuck with me—and so did the dream.
Fast-forward to 2023, and I finally made it. Rio is electric, alive, and stunning in a way that photos can’t quite capture. This isn’t just a city you visit—it’s one that moves through you.
If you’re planning your first trip, here are my top five tips for things to do in Rio de Janeiro that go beyond the usual and tap into the heartbeat of this unforgettable city:
🌟 5 Unique and Unforgettable Things to Do in Rio de Janeiro
1. Visit the Selarón Steps—Early! The Escadaria Selarón is a kaleidoscope of color and creativity, but it’s also no secret. Get there early—like, sunrise early—if you want to soak up the vibrant mosaic in peace. Bonus: the morning light makes for dreamy photos. Allow time to appreciate the individual mosaic tiles -- even better, search for ones that are meaningful to you. I found one that said Ski Utah.
2. Cheer on a fútbal match with a local host. Book an experience with HomeFans and you’ll go from visitor to die-hard fan in 90 minutes flat. You’ll tailgate like a local, cheer like you’ve lived there forever, and leave with an adrenaline rush—and maybe even a new jersey. After experiencing a Fluminense home match, you will struggle to think that an NFL game has energy.
3. Discover hidden corners with a local photographer. I booked a tour with Rio Photo Tours, and it was one of the best decisions I made. Not only did I come away with incredible photos, but I also saw parts of the city I never would have found on my own. It was equal parts sightseeing, storytelling, and street art appreciation. Rodrigo will tailor the experience to your photography level and maneuver the city in only the way a lifelong Carioca can.
4. Watch the sunrise from Copacabana Beach. It’s pure magic. Locals are already out jogging or sipping fresh coconut water, and the city feels calm and golden. There’s something so moving about watching the sky light up over one of the world’s most iconic beaches.
5. Book the skip-the-line cogwheel train to Christ the Redeemer. Trust me on this—buy the pass in advance. Sit on the right-hand side of the train for jaw-dropping views of Tijuca National Park, the largest urban rainforest on the planet. The journey is half the experience. Remember that the skip-the-line pass is only for the ascent; you will be relegated to standing in a long line for the descent. No worries, you will be so enamored that you just saw one of the Seven Wonders of the World, you won't mind the line heading down.
🇧🇷 Don’t Forget the New Brazil Visa Requirement
If you’re a U.S. passport holder planning a trip to Brazil, be aware that starting April 10, 2025, a visa will be required. You can apply online through the official Brazil e-visa portal. It’s a quick process, but be sure to handle it at least a couple of weeks before your departure to avoid any last-minute stress.
